Our frequently asked questions

How is the Fund managed?

The Trustees of the Fund are the Sheaf District Executive Committee, and they have appointed an Investment Committee, which includes some trustees to manage the Fund on a day-to-day basis and approve grants on its behalf.

Is there anything you will not give a grant for?

Yes, we do not fund equipment, vehicles or the employment of young people or adults. Generally, we do not fund coaching or other qualifications or Scout Adult Leader Training.

Will my application details remain confidential?

The Committee undertake to stay within the rule of the Data Protection Act and will only circulate personal information between members of the committee and the trustees of Sheaf District Scout.

Do I have to be a Scout to apply for funding from the Brian Sellars fund?

No, the funding is available to young people between the ages of 14 and 25, although the Trust, in special cases, may consider applications for other age groups.

I want to go on a trip to Alton Towers with a group of friends, will the fund pay for this?

No, a trip to an amusement park or similar would not be eligible. The activity must have an element of adventure and must be a challenge to the individual Such activities could be expeditions, climbing, sailing, residential courses etc.

Does this mean that a Beaver Scout trip to a climbing wall would not attract funding?

What is adventurous to an 18 year old is very different to what is adventurous to a 7 year old – so a trip to a climbing wall for a

Beaver would be considered.

If I apply, will I automatically get funding?

No, each application is considered by a committee which meets six times a year and its decision is final.

You gave my organisation funding for an activity last year, will you automatically give the same funding this year?

No, each application is considered separately.

I want to go in two weeks time, will you consider my application as soon as possible?

We normally expect applications to be submitted at least two months prior to the activity taking place.

I have changed my mind and now don’t want to go, can a friend take my place?

No, grants are not transferable.

I went on a trip earlier this year, can I claim retrospective funding?

No, all grants must be approved prior to the event.

Can the monies be paid directly to me so I can make my own arrangements?

No, all monies can only be paid to the organising body.
