How is the Fund managed?
The Trustees of the Fund are the Sheaf District Executive Committee, and they have appointed an Investment Committee, which includes some trustees to manage the Fund on a day-to-day basis and approve grants on its behalf.
Is there anything you will not give a grant for?
Yes, we do not fund the employment of young people or adults, uniform or activities that do not demonstrate a clear adventure component.
Will my application details remain confidential?
The Committee undertakes to comply with UK GDPR and all relevant data‑protection legislation. Personal information will only be shared between members of the Committee and the Sheaf District Trustee Board for the purposes of assessing and administering applications.
Do I have to be a member of the Scouts to apply for funding from the Brian Sellars Fund?
No, the funding is available to all young people up to 25, subject to a relevant connection to our catchment area, and other conditions.
I want to go on a trip to Alton Towers with a group of friends, will the fund pay for this?
No, a trip to an amusement park or similar would not be eligible. The activity must have an adventure element and be a challenge to the individual. Such activities could be expeditions, climbing, sailing, residential courses etc.
Does this mean that a Beaver Scout trip to a climbing wall would not attract funding?
What is adventurous to an 18 year old is very different to what is adventurous to a 7 year old – so a trip to a climbing wall for a Beaver Colony would be considered.
If I apply, will I automatically get funding?
No, each application is considered by a committee which meets regularly throughout the year. The committee reviews every submission on its merits and also takes into account the overall volume of applications received and the amount of funding already committed during the year. These factors can influence the timing and outcome of decisions.
The decision of the committee is final.
You gave my organisation funding for an activity last year, will you automatically give the same funding this year?
No, each application is considered separately.
I want to go in two weeks time, will you consider my application as soon as possible?
We normally expect applications to be submitted at least two months prior to the activity taking place.
I have changed my mind and now don’t want to go, can a friend take my place?
No, grants are not transferable between people or groups..
I went on a trip earlier this year, can I claim retrospective funding?
No, all grants must be approved prior to the event.
Can the monies be paid directly to me so I can make my own arrangements?
No, all monies can only be paid to the activity organising body.
